I’m 14 years old, and I live in Somerset. I started paddling with Frome Canoe Club at the age of 9 and immediately found a love for all things paddling. I took up canoe slalom in 2016, and did a few races for fun. In 2017, I decided that I really wanted to take this seriously and after some strong results, I started climbing the divisions, almost going from Division 3 to Division 1 in a single season. At that stage, I was spotted by British Canoeing and invited to join the Regional Talent Academy, and immediately I know that it was my ambition to paddle for Great Britain
After winter training with the RTA, I went from Div 2 to Div 1 in five races, and at the end of the season was moved up to British Canoeing’s Regional Super Squad. At that point I decided to take C1 as well as K1, and got some respectable results. Unfortunately at that point I had to take a couple of months off due to a back injury, but with support of my physio and trainer we got through this and I reckon I’ve come back stronger, gaining a 2nd and 6th place in the first 2 races back. I’m aiming to get up to Prem this season, while I’m still 14, although I race as a J16.
I love paddling for fun, but I take a pretty serious approach to my training, more or less every week at Lee Valley or HPP, and 2-3 times a week at my home club, where I also help coach some of the younger paddlers sometimes. Somerset isn’t really handy for challenging water, but I make the best of it- whether it’s training with my club, on river trips down in the west-country or the regular training camps at Nottingham or Lee Valley. I’m very proud to be teaming up with Flow Kayaks- they have the same love of all things paddling as I do!
So, this year I hope to get to Prem, and then the hard work continues. I’m really focussed on my goal of being on the GB team, so lots to do in both K1 and C1- and to be honest I’m thinking I might have a go at Extreme Slalom next year as well! There’s a lot of hard work between now and then, but I’m well and truly up for it! See you around!
